Passage 1
In recent years, especially during the 1960s,there was much discussion about"the brain drain排干,流失),"which dealt with the problem of students and learned people who left their own countries for other countries that offered better chances for study, research, and employment. For example, according to a report from U.N,
between 1962 and 1966 more than 50 percent of all engineering graduates of Iran and 14 percent of Iranian scientists left their country for work abroad.Over 30 percent of
Chileanengineers and 15 percent of Turkish physicians also went to work in other countries.Probably the greatest brain drain occurred among young scientists who had gone abroad to study.Marry of them had planned toreturn to their countries to teach but chose to remain in more industrialized nations where they were able to continue their work and their research in fields in which there were no job possibilities at home. The countries that attracted most of these scientists were the Unites States,Great Britain,Germany,France,Canada, and Australia.
Recent studies show that the brain to the United States may be decreasing. Many
foreign scientists are going home again, and in some cases American scientists are
leaving the United States for employment in other countries,The main reasons are
that good jobs are becoming fewer here, money for national research has been sharply cut,and university felowships reduced too. However,in the field of medicine the drain to the United States still goes on.Today more than one of every five American doctors is foreign—born, and several thousand foreign doctors immigrate to the United States each year.Over eighty countries have asked the State Department to send studernts who are skilled in important fields such as medicine back home when

Passage 4
Japan's post-World War I value system of diligence, cooperation and hard work
is chaugug Recent surveys show that Japanese youth have become a"Me
Generation"that rejects traditional values.
“Around 1990 many Japanese, especially young people, abandoned the values of economic success and began searching for new sets of values to bring them happiness,"writes sociologist Yasuhiro Yoshizaki.Japanese youth are placing more
mportance on the individual's pursuit of happiness and less on the values of work, family and society.
Japanese students seem to be losing patience with work, unlike their counterparts in the United States and Korea. In a 2003 survey of college students in the three
ountries, only 10%of the Japanese regarded work as a primary value, compared with
47%of Korean students and 27%of American students.A greater proportion of
Japanese aged 18 to 24 also preferred easy jobs without heavy responsibility.
Concern for family values is waning among younger as they pursue an inner world of private satisfaction. It appears that many younger-generation Japanese are
losing both respect for their parents and a sense of responsibility to the family.Author Yoshizaki attributes the change to Japanese parents'over indulgence(溺爱)of their children, material affluence and growing concern for private matters.
Diminishing social responsibility, according to Yoshizaki,is tied to the growing interest in pleasure and personal satisfaction.A study comparing society-conscious
youth from 1987 to 2000 found that the Japanese had slipped far behind American
and Australian students.Yoshizaki concludes that the entire value system of Japanese youth is undergoing major transformation, but the younger generation has not yet found a new organized value system to replace the old.

From childhood to old age, weall use language as a means of broadening our
knowledge of ourselves and the world about us.When humans first61,they
were like newborn children, unable to use this62 tool.Yet once language
developed, the possibilities for human kind's future 63 and cultural growth
increased.
Many linguists believe that evolution is64 for our ability to produce
and use language.They65that our highly evolved brain provides us 66
an innate language ability not found in lower 67.Proponents of this innateness
theory say that our 68 for language is inborn, but that language itself develops gradually,69 a function of the growth of the brain during childhood. Therefore there are critical 70 times for language development.
Current 71 of innateness theory are mixed, however, evidence supporting the lexistence of some innate abilities is undeniable.72,more and more schools are discovering that foreign languages are best taught in 73 grades.Young children often
can learn several languages by being 74 to them, while adults have a much harder time learning another language once the 75 of their first language have become
firmly fixed.
76 some aspects of language are undeniably innate, language does not develop automatically in a vacuum.Children who have been 77 from other human beings do not possess language. This demonstrates that 78 with other human beings is
necessary for proper language development.Some.linguists believe that this is even
more basic to human language 79 than any innate capacities. These theorists view language as imitative, learned behavior.80 children learn language from their parents by imitating them.Parents gradually shape their child's language skills by positively reinforcing precise imitations and negatively reinforcing imprecise ones.
